Summer perfume is about being noticed from across the room. Fall perfume is about what happens when someone gets close. The citrus and coconut go back in the drawer, and out come the heavier things: smoke, leather, booze, vanilla that has been left in the sun a little too long. It is the season for a scent that lingers on a jacket and makes someone ask what you are wearing at the end of the night, not the beginning.
Here are the ten we are reaching for this season, for dinner on Sunset, a dark bar in the West Village, or a date that goes later than planned.
The Smoky Ones
1. Maison Margiela Replica Jazz Club. Rum, tobacco leaf, and vanilla, with pink pepper on top. It smells like a leather booth in a bar with no sign out front. Warm, a little sweet, and easy to wear if you are new to tobacco scents.
2. Maison Margiela Replica By the Fireplace. Clove, roasted chestnut, and smoky woods. Literally smells like a fire you are sitting in front of, in the best way. Wear it on the first cold night of the year and thank us later.
3. Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille. The big one. Rich tobacco, vanilla, tonka, and dried fruit. A splurge and a statement. One spray is plenty; two is a commitment.
The Dark Sweets
4. YSL Black Opium. Coffee, vanilla, and white florals. It is the espresso martini of perfume: a little sweet, a little bitter, and very much a night-out scent.
5. Kayali Vanilla 28. For people who want vanilla, but grown up. Brown sugar, amber, and tonka, warm without tipping into cupcake. It wears close and gets better as the night goes on.
6. Tom Ford Lost Cherry. Black cherry, bitter almond, and a boozy liqueur note. It is red lipstick in a bottle: confident, a little dramatic, and absolutely made for dinner dates.
7. Kilian Love, Don't Be Shy. Orange blossom and burnt sugar over vanilla. The sweetest pick on this list, but there is something sly about it. It smells like you were somewhere fun before you got here.
The Skin Scents
Not everyone wants to announce themselves. These read as "you, but better," and they are the ones people tend to lean in for.
8. Phlur Missing Person. A soft, clean musk that smells like the inside of someone's sweater. Deeply intimate, a little nostalgic, and impossible to overdo.
9. Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume. A single note, ambroxan, which smells warm, mineral, and slightly salty on skin. It reads differently on everyone, which is the whole point. Great for layering under any of the heavier picks.
The Wild Card
10. Diptyque Philosykos. Fig, fig leaf, and green wood. It is the unexpected choice for fall: creamy and green at once, like a walk through a garden at dusk. Wear it when you want to smell interesting rather than seductive.
How to Wear It So People Lean In
A great fragrance worn badly is just a cloud. A few rules:
Hit pulse points, then stop. Base of the throat, behind the ears, inner wrists. Do not rub your wrists together; it just breaks down the top notes faster.
Moisturize first. Scent holds longer on hydrated skin. An unscented body lotion or a little balm on pulse points before you spray makes a real difference, especially as the air gets drier.
Spray your hair, lightly. One mist on a brush, then run it through. Hair holds scent for hours and releases it every time you move.
Layer with intention. A skin scent underneath and something richer on top: try Not a Perfume under Lost Cherry, or Missing Person under Vanilla 28.
Go lighter in small spaces. Dinner at a counter is not the place for four sprays of Tobacco Vanille.
Sample before you commit. Fall scents change a lot over a few hours. Wear a sample for a full evening before buying the big bottle.
Finish the Look
Scent is the last thing you put on and the first thing they remember. For everything else, our Date Night Beauty Essentials guide covers makeup, hair, and the bag essentials, and the studio can handle the rest: lash extensions that look good by candlelight, or an airbrush tan for a little warmth under a black dress.
