Walking is the New Going Out
At some point, drinks became walks. This may be age, wellness culture, the price of cocktails, or a collective desire to speak to our friends in circumstances where everyone can hear. Whatever the cause, walking has emerged as the rare social plan that leaves the face less puffy the next morning.
It helps that a walk asks so little. There is no reservation, no dress code beyond shoes, and no strategic review of the menu before arrival. One can be late by seven minutes without destabilizing the table. Sunglasses permit privacy; a baseball cap suggests either athletic intention or a complicated night. Both are accepted.
The FORM club walk around the Silver Lake Reservoir belongs to this new category of social wellness: movement without punishment, community without choreography. You arrive, walk, talk, drink water, and return to the day feeling fractionally more human. There are no leaderboards. Nobody needs to disclose a personal best. We’re hosting these walks the first and third Saturday of each month at 9am, starting at the Silver Lake Recreation Center.
Beauty has always been implicated in how we move through the world, though the relationship is more interesting when it is not confined to mirrors. A walk can provide daylight, a shift in mood, conversation, and the mental spaciousness that occasionally appears once the phone is no longer six inches from the face. General physical activity has well-established benefits, but the immediate pleasure may be simpler: for an hour, one is not refreshing anything.
The ideal walk is the one likely to happen again. Choose a pleasant route, go early when the weather is hot, carry water, and invite someone who does not turn every silence into an emergency. Those returning to exercise, managing health conditions, pregnant, or unsure what activity suits them should seek appropriate professional guidance.
What comes along
- Sun hat
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen for reapplication
- Comfortable performance socks
The beauty look is equally dialed back: sunscreen, lifted lashes, brushed brows, lip balm. Afterward, cleanse gently if you have been sweating and change out of damp clothes. The ritual should leave you refreshed, not burdened by an elaborate second ritual designed to recover from it.
Walking may be the most elegant form of maintenance because it does not insist on transformation. It simply makes the day feel more inhabited. Come for the reservoir, stay for the gossip, and leave before anyone suggests brunch.
